The Martyrs district, epicenter of good taste

9th arrondissement, Paris
See on map

The Martyrs district is built around the legendary street of the same name and offers a neighborhood with the feel of a small Montmartre village. A connecting axis between the center of Paris and the Butte Montmartre, rue des Martyrs has preserved its charms of yesteryear, with its old cabarets and its typical facades. The Martyrs district has today become an unmissable place in Paris, hosting elegant terraces, trendy restaurants and trendy boutiques.

A bit of history…

Rue des Martyrs takes its name from Saint-Denis, the oldest bishop of Paris, to whom the torture of being beheaded was inflicted. Like a true martyr, he picked up his head and walked up the famous street, an event which explains its name today. If Martyrs – like the entire 9th arrondissement – has always been a working-class neighborhood, it has undergone major transformations in recent years, before becoming the busy street we know. Today, walking around Rue des Martyrs allows you to realize this recent change: the architecture alternates between post-Haussmann bourgeois buildings and small, more popular buildings.

A dedicated artery to culinary discoveries

Rue des Martyrs is undoubtedly one of the most commercial streets in the 9th arrondissement. Fresh produce, pastry shops, cheese shops, wine cellars… The street has no shortage of good addresses, which are always very popular. Its lively character also attracts many new traders. Organic bread bakery, natural wine cellar... Here, the key words are refinement, with pride of place for quality products. Running out of ideas for a dinner menu? You are sure to find everything you need (and more) on rue des Martyrs, without having to leave its sidewalks.

As for restaurants and cafes, the street also offers a wide variety of choices. Italian, Asian, Greek, French brasserie cuisine... There is something for all tastes and taste buds.

Rue des Martyrs: at the heart of the trend

Between the café terraces where we meet on weekends there are also a multitude of fashion boutiques, concept stores dedicated to beauty, eyewear makers, leather goods makers, jewelers... This is the ideal place for an afternoon of shopping.

Just a few steps away are also Pigalle and Rue Pierre Fontaine, unmissable places for Parisian nightlife. Bars, hotel terraces and fashionable clubs: this is the (not so secret) haunt of artists.

An air of small village

Living in the Martyrs district means enjoying a family atmosphere, mixed with constant excitement, with always new addresses to discover. With the air of a small village, the street welcomes a bourgeois and dynamic population, seeking the colorful and lively charm of the 9th arrondissement, concentrated on a single street. The neighborhood appeals to young professionals, couples and families, in a “bobo” atmosphere.

Rue des Martyrs: the must-see places

The Notre-Dame-de-Lorette church: at the very bottom of rue des Martyrs is the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette church, a strong symbol of the landscape of the Martyrs district. Built at the beginning of the 19th century , it reflects the neo-classical style of the time.

Les Cabarets: rue des Martyrs was once crisscrossed with taverns, some of which were renowned. These are these taverns and cabarets of yesteryear that can still be found at the same addresses. First, at 74 rue, Madame Arthur, a legendary venue, hosts the most beautiful cabaret and DJ shows from around the world. At 75, we discover Le Divan du Monde, an old musette where we enjoy listening to current and eclectic music.

La Cigale: la Cigale has been the favorite stage of the greatest artists for over 100 years. Every evening, the red carpet is dedicated to a comedian, a musician or a group who performs before the always amazed eyes of the spectators.

The Great Synagogue of Paris: generally called the “Synagogue of Victory”, it is the heart of the spiritual life of the Parisian Jewish community. Its architecture is an ornamental feat, between Romanesque, Byzantine and Second Empire styles.

The Lutin: this ride, nicknamed “The Lutin”, unanimously brings great joy to children. Embodying the spirit of Paris, with its carriages, its wooden horses and its thousand colors and lights, it is the perfect meeting place for a moment of fun between young and old.

Green spaces

The 9th arrondissement is a haven of greenery in the bustling city. At the foot of Rue des Martyrs, Place Saint-Georges hides Square Alex Biscarre, a haven of tranquility amidst the bustle of the surrounding area. This park, with its lush vegetation and playground, is a popular family spot. Beginning at the door of our agency, Avenue Trudaine stands out for its tree-lined paths. It goes up in particular in front of the square d'Anvers, famous for its bandstand.

Completely renovated in 2022, Square Montholon completes this picture with its picturesque atmosphere and welcoming lawns, creating a meeting and relaxation space for residents.

More emblematic spaces are easily accessible from rue des Martyrs. This district is also perfect for accessing the Sacré-Cœur gardens and their panoramic views of the city, as well as going to the Tuileries gardens and the banks of the Seine for a romantic stroll with line 12.
