Saint-Georges, the romantic district of Paris
The Saint-Georges district, located in the heart of the 9th arrondissement, is attractive for its neo-classical architecture and its calm but lively atmosphere. From the 19th century, illustrious authors and artists such as Alexandre Dumas, Paul Gauguin and Adolphe Thiers frequented the place and left their mark on it. Cafés, bars, restaurants, theaters now litter the streets of what was at the time the cradle of romanticism.
A bit of history…
The Saint-Georges district owes its name to the Saint of the same name, who slew the dragon, symbolizing the victory of Faith over Evil. In the 19th century, sumptuous mansions were built there in the neo-classical style, which earned it the name of New Athens. Saint-Georges became the stronghold of the Romantic movement and welcomed all the greatest thinkers, musicians and painters of that era, such as Eugène Delacroix or Frédéric Chopin. Maupassant also made the Saint-Georges district the setting for his masterpiece novel, Bel Ami.
A mixture of heritage history and modernity
The Saint-Georges district brings together a bourgeois population looking for large apartments or young executives looking for smaller accommodation and a central geographical location in Paris. Living in the Saint-Georges district of Paris is a mix of historical heritage and modernity. The neighborhood is both quiet and residential, but also dynamic with a multitude of cafes, restaurants, or concept store boutiques.
Around the Saint-Georges Square
Built around the famous Place Saint-Georges, the neighborhood offers a calm and pleasant living environment. This emblem of the district follows a circular route around a fountain and a monument dedicated to the illustrator Gavarni. At number 27, Adolphe Thiers' hotel now houses the Dosne-Thiers Foundation. At No. 28, the building with its rich decor is the former hotel of the Marquise de Païva. The Saint-Georges theater, inaugurated in 1829, is still present on the legendary roundabout of the square.
At the heart of 9th district
The Saint-Georges district has an ideal location, between the popular Martyrs district to the north and the Saint-Lazare district to the south with its department stores. Rue des Martyrs is full of grocers, caterers, cheese makers, wine merchants and trendy stalls. Just a few steps from Saint-Georges, it concentrates the best restaurants and food shops.
